|Baseball Hits Three Homers to Sweep Sat. DH, 9-3|
Charlotte hit a trio of home runs for the first time in a game this season and swept a Saturday home doubleheader from visiting Siena by a 9-3 final in game two at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. The 49ers improve to 13-5 on the season, dropping the Saints to 3-12. Charlotte won 5-3 in game one earlier in the afternoon.
The 49ers put up two runs in the bottom of the first, the fourth time this season they have scored in the opening frame. Outfielder Michael Green (Richmond, Va. / Thomas Dale HS) scored the first tin on an RBI single past the first baseman and outfielder J.J. Elseser (Brunswick, Ga.) was quickly driven home with an RBI single by senior third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS). Green has reached base safely in all 14 games he has played in this season.
For the fourth time in the series, Siena matched Charlotte's run total to even the contest. The Saints plated two runs on a single by third baseman Brian Fay to level the score.
In the bottom half of the second, Charlotte pushed across five runs on four hits and a fielding error, the capper coming on a two-run blast to left from junior outfielder Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS) to make it 7-2. Elseser had a pair of RBI in the inning and Basen delivered his second of the game with a single.
That score held until the top of the fifth when Brett Lang (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS) hit a solo homer to left, followed two batters later by an inside-the-park homer from freshman catch Nick Daddio (Huntersville, N.C. / Hough HS) who scored when the Siena right fielder had his jersey catch in the bullpen fence chasing down the ball down the line and he could not get free, allowing Daddio to motor home.
The Saints got a run on two hits in the ninth for the final scoring play of the afternoon.
Charlotte junior starting pitcher Brock Hudgens (Jamestown, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS) tied his career high with eight strikeouts in the contest. He lasted five innings, giving up six hits and a pair of walks for the two runs against him.
The loss went to freshman starter Bryan Goossens, who fell to 0-3 on the season. Only two of the seven runs charged to him were earned in two innings pitched. He allowed eight hits, but recorded no walks or strikeouts in the contest.
Reliever Ryan Mas (Matthews, N.C. / Butler HS) was tagged with a run in the ninth, but struck out three in the final four innings, scattering four hits for his first career save. Hudgens and Mas combined to strike out 11, a new season-high for the staff in a agame this season.
Charlotte ends the 13-game home stand with the series finale against Siena Sunday at noon.
