Charlotte redshirt freshman catcher Brett Lang (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS) doubled off the wall in left center for the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the eighth and reliever Hunter May (Cornelius, N.C. / Pitt CC) nabbed his team-leading fifth win of the season as Charlotte outlasted visiting Siena 5-3 in game one of a Saturday doubleheader at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. The win pushes Charlotte's record to 12-5, while the Saints drop to 3-11.

Lang's double came with one out in the eighth frame with junior left fielder Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS) out at second. Right fielder J.J. Elseser (Brunswick, Ga.) drove in Lang with a two-out single to left center for the final run of the game.

Charlotte took its first lead on an RBI single in the fourth from sophomore designated hitter Derek Gallello (Fredericksburg, Va. / Riverbend HS), driving in senior third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) after he had singled earlier in the inning.

Siena scored its first run in the seventh on a pair of doubles, the last with an RBI from designated hitter Kyle Baldani to tie the game.

Charlotte scored two in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead for the second time in the contest. The Niners drew two walks and scored the first run on a wild pitch. The second came home on an RBI single from Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) for the 3-1 margin.

An error allowed a runner on base in the top of the eighth before outfielder Mike Fish hit a two-run homer out to left to tie the game again, this time at three runs. That set up the dramatic final at bat for Charlotte.

May pitched two innings, striking out a pair (5-0). He has appeared in 12 of Charlotte's 17 games this season. It was the eighth win for the bullpen.

Both starters pitched well, but neither got a decision in the game. Charlotte starter John Hamilton (Strongsville, Ohio) matched his career high with seven innings pitched. He allowed just two earned runs on eight hits and a walk, striking out three.

Siena starter Justin Brantley was charged with two earned runs in six innings. He gave up five hits and four walks, with five strikeouts.

The loss went to Siena reliever Matt Quintana (0-1). In 1.1 innings, three runs were charged to him on three hits and a walk.

The two teams finish the doubleheader this afternoon.

NOTES: Michael Green (Richmond, Va. / Thomas Dale HS) recorded a hit and drew a walk to extend his streak of reaching base safely to all 13 games he's played in this season... Opponents are hitting just .155 against May this season...  Hamilton's team-best earned run average rose slightly to 1.88 this season.
