CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte softball team fell 2-1 in a close game to Auburn on the second day of the War Eagle Classic in Auburn at Jane B. Moore Field, earlier Saturday afternoon.
Charlotte (7-5 overall) finished with a season low two hits against the Tigers who improved to 15-4 and recorded six hits. After the second inning, the game was tied until the seventh when Auburn scored the game-winning run.
Auburn jumped on the 49ers in the first inning and used two hits to secure a 1-0 edge. But the Tigers’ advantage was short-lived because the Niners responded in the second inning. Samantha Slade led off with a walk and stole second base to get into scoring position for the 49ers. Kalie Lang’s single to leftfield that scored Slade tied the game 1-1.
Both teams went back and forth but came short of connecting their hits with runs until Auburn hit consecutive doubles in the seventh inning with two outs to retake the lead, 2-1.
Charlotte’s only other hit was registered by Briana Gwaltney who is on a ten-game hit streak.
Katie Watkins pitched the entire game for Charlotte and recorded three strikeouts. Watkins fell to 4-5 on the season.
Due to extremely cold temperatures, three of Saturday’s games at the War Eagle Classic were cancelled. Charlotte was scheduled to play Minnesota at 3 p.m. No make-up games have been determined. The 49ers are scheduled to play Middle Tennessee State on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
