The Charlotte 49ers (18-7, A-10: 6-5), who have had eight days off since their last game, return to action in when they play Temple (18-8, A-10: 7-5) in Halton Arena, Sunday, February 24 at 4 pm. The 49ers enter Sunday's game a half game back of Temple for sixth place in the Atlantic 10.
The 49ers players are visiting the Levine Children's Hospital this afternoon Friday, February 22. They will also welcome a number of Levine Children's Hospital families to the game on Sunday. The families will receive a behind the scenes tour of Halton Arena, including the men's basketball locker room and the chance to get onto the Halton Arena court. The families will also be invited to the pre-game hospitality event.
At halftime, the 49ers and Levine Children's Hospital will honor 49ers cheerleading alum and former coach Jason Peetz and his family for winning the Primrose Schools Family Dance Off and earning $30,000 for Levine Children's Hospital.
Associate director of basketball operations Stephen Doughton has established The Stephen Doughton Jr. Foundation for Cancer research and patient assistance. Doughton, who was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2006, has been in remission since 2008. The Stephen Doughton Jr. Foundation will have tables set up in both hospitality areas to accept donations on site. Taking a closer look at the 49ers heading into the Temple game. Chris Braswell, who scored 23 points and grabbed six rebounds in the 49ers game against Temple a couple of weeks ago, averages 11.4 points per game. Braswell is second on the team in rebounding at 5.6 boards per game. Braswell is one of six players in school history with 1,000 points and 800 rebounds in their career. Pierria Henry, who scored 14 points and dished out a career-high nine assists against Temple earlier this season, averages 9.6 points per game. Henry leads the team in assists with 90 and steals with 70. Henry ranks among the nation's leaders in steals. Willie Clayton, who scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the 49ers last game at Saint Louis, averages 8.6 points per game. Clayton leads the team in rebounding at 6.9 boards per game. Terrence Williams, who scored 11 points off the bench at Temple, averages 6.8 points per game.
Darion Clark, who scored 11 points off the bench at Temple, averages 6.5 points per game. Clark is third on the team in rebounding at 4.9 boards per game. Denzel Ingram, who has started the 21 of the last 22 games, averages 6.4 points per game. Ingram scored 13 points and hit three three-point field goals in the 49ers earlier meeting with Temple. E. Victor Nickerson, who has started the last five games, averages 5.7 points per game. Nickerson scored eight points and made the victory-clinching steal in the finals seconds of the 49ers 71-67 win at 10th-ranked Butler, February 13. Ivan Benkovic recorded his first career double-figure scoring game with 10 points off the bench against Massachusetts, February 2.
Temple enters Sunday's game off an 82-74 home win over La Salle on Thursday. Temple has won four of their last five games. Temple's Khalif Wyatt leads the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 19.7 points per game. Anthony Lee leads Temple in rebounding at 7.3 boards per game. Lee also is second on the team in scoring at 11.1 points per game.
This game will mark the second meeting this season and the 14th meeting overall between Charlotte and Temple, who leads the all-time series 8-5. Temple defeated Charlotte, 79-57, in their last meeting in Halton Arena, January 25, 2012. Former 49ers standout Javarris Barnett led the 49ers with 14 points. Braswell scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds in that game. Temple beat the 49ers 89-88 in their first meeting this season at Temple, February 6, 2013. Chris Braswell led five 49ers in double-figures with 23 points. In the first meeting, the 49ers had the ball twice in the final minute with a chance to either tie or take the lead.
