|Niners fall in season opener to Wisconsin|
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte softball team fell to Wisconsin 12-3, in its season opener, earlier Friday afternoon at the First Pitch Classic held at the D.l. Phillips Softball Complex.
The Badgers (1-0) took an early 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second inning. The 49ers (0-1) led off the inning with a hit to right center from Chelsea Ingersoll. With one out, Jessica Plemmons recorded her first career hit at her first at-bat with a single to centerfield. Ingersoll advanced to third on a Wisconsin error. Chelsea Stamey’s hit to centerfield allowed Ingersoll to slice the Badgers’ lead to 5-1.
Chelsea Lisikatos relived starting pitcher Katie Watkins in the middle of the third inning but the Wisconsin offense didn’t let down and grabbed a 9-1 advantage in the fourth inning.
Charlotte remained firm and scored two runs in the fifth inning to keep the game going. With one out, Alex Rogers and Natalie Capone had back-to-back hits for the Niners. A passed ball allowed the 49ers to have base runners on second and third. Briana Gwaltney loaded the bases after she was walked, setting up a sacrifice fly from Kalie Lang to left field to score Rogers. With two outs, Ingersoll kept the inning going with another hit to centerfield to score Capone and cut Wisconsin’s lead to 9-3.
The Badgers tacked on three more runs in the next inning. The Niners were unable to responded ending the game in the sixth inning.
Charlotte finished with nine hits and was led by Capone and Ingersoll with two each. Rogers, Gwaltney, Plemmons, Lexi Betancourt, and Stamey each recorded a hit. Lang, Stamey, and Ingersoll finished with a RBI.
Watkins recorded the loss for the 49ers and recorded three strikeouts.
For Wisconsin, Cassandra Darrah took the win and finished with one strikeout.
Charlotte returns back to action on Saturday, Feb.9 when it faces Notre Dame at 12 pm at the D.L. Phillips Softball Complex.
