CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team
won its first match of the spring dual campaign by earning the doubles point
and splitting the six singles matches for a 4-3 triumph over visiting Campbell
Saturday afternoon at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
"It was a great team win today," head coach Michaela Gorman said. "The team did
a great job bouncing back after a hard-fought loss yesterday. We will get back
to work this week and get ready for next weekend."
The Niners won two of the three doubles matches, with the other left
unfinished, to seal the early 1-0 lead. Charlotte (3-1) received an 8-0 win at
the top spot, as Anna Ekelund and Lisa Grosselius knocked off the Camels'
Tamara Stanic and Ewa Telenga.
The point then fell into the 49ers' favor as Tyler Baker and Jessica Pérez
handed Kristen Renz and Lauren Vaughn an 8-3 setback in the No. 3 meeting.
The two teams each won three times in singles action with Campbell (1-3)
garnering triumphs in the top-three slots, while the Charlotte victories came
at the bottom of the lineup.
Baker picked up her first collegiate dual match win, defeating Lourdes Ros in
the No. 4 contest 6-3, 6-1. Ekelund posted a 6-3, 6-0 decision against Renz in
the No. 5 match, while Iveta Guneva tallied a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Vaughn in
the No. 6 tilt.
The 49ers fought hard in their three losses, forcing two three-set decisions,
each featuring a tiebreaker in a set, while also forcing extra games to be
played in the other match.
Charlotte returns to action when it plays host to Mercer at 1 p.m. Friday, also
at the on-campus Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
