KENNESAW, GA - Behind
a 14-2 run over the final six and half minutes and two players in
double-figures, the Charlotte 49ers (10-1) defeated Kennesaw State (1-8),
66-52, on the road for their 10th win.
"It was good victory today," Charlotte coach Alan Major
said. "It was a great way to bounce back after Friday's game."
Georgia natives DeMario Mayfield with 14 points and E.
Victor Nickerson with 11 points led the 49ers. JT Thompson scored eight points
off the bench. Chris Braswell, Darion Clark and Pierria Henry each scored seven
points apiece.
"DeMario and E. Victor both did good jobs of playing under
control," Major said. "They also did a good job of driving into the paint and
scoring."
Charlotte finished the game with a 42-26 advantage on points
in the paint. Charlotte behind the scoring of Mayfield, Nickerson, Thompson and
Braswell off the bench finished the game with a 40-8 advantage in bench
scoring.
Charlotte scored eight of the game's first 12 points taking
an 8-4 lead when Terrence Williams scored inside with 14:39 on the clock.
Then, Kennesaw went on a 10-2 run taking a 14-10 lead after
Jordan Montgomery connected on a three with 12:01 on the clock.
The lead exchanged hands several teams with neither team having
a lead larger than 3-4 points for the next nine minutes.
Then, Kennesaw State's Delbert Love connected on a three
giving his team a 33-28 lead with 3:19 on the clock. Charlotte behind the
scoring of Henry, Williams and Braswell scored the final five points of the
half tying the score at 33 at halftime.
In the second half, Kennesaw State scored five of the first
seven points taking a 38-35 lead with 17:47 on the clock. Then, the 49ers went
on a 6-0 run over the next three minutes behind the scoring of Mayfield and
Braswell. Mayfield gave the 49ers the lead for good 39-38 with 15:32 on the
clock.
Charlotte maintained a lead of 1-4 points for the next eight
minutes until with 6:29 left in the game, the 49ers closed the game on a 14-2
run which began with a jump shot by Denzel Ingram. Nickerson, Henry, Mayfield
and Braswell scored during the 49ers' run.
The 49ers return home to begin a four-game home stand that
will run into 2013. First, the 49ers face Radford in Halton Arena, Wednesday,
December 19 at 7:30 pm.
