|49ers Host UAB In The NCAA Tournament, Thursday|
Charlotte, NC- The Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team (14-3-3) will play UAB (10-7-2) at Transamerica Field in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Thursday, November 15 at 7 pm. The 49ers are making their eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and their third appearance in the last four years. Last season, the 49ers advanced to the College Cup Final for the first time in school history. Charlotte has reached the College Cup twice in 1996 and 2011. The 49ers are 6-5-4 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
The winner of the Charlotte-UAB game advances to the second round to face third-seed Georgetown on the road, Sunday, November 18 at 1 pm.
Admission to Thursday's game is $7 for adults, $3 for youth (17 and under) and $3 (per person) for groups of 10 or more. Group tickets must be purchased in advance by phone before Noon on Thursday, November 15th . Fans may also purchase tickets at the Transamerica Field ticket booths beginning at 5:30pm on the day of the game.
UNC Charlotte student admission is FREE courtesy of the Department of Athletics by presenting a valid UNC Charlotte student ID on game day at the Transamerica Field ticket gates.
Jennings Rex, who scored a goal against Duquesne in the A-10 Tournament last Thursday, leads the team with nine goals. Gentile is second on the team with eight goals. Donnie Smith, who was recently named A-10 Midfielder of the Year, is third on the team with four goals. Gentile leads the 49ers with seven assists. Isaac Caughran is second on the team with six assists. Tyler Gibson, who was recently named first-team All-Atlantic 10 for the third straight year, is third on the team with five assists. He has also scored three goals this season including the game-winning goal against Duquesne last week.
The 49ers defense behind the play of first-team All-Atlantic 10 selection goalkeeper Klay Davis and defenders Anthony Perez, Thomas Allen, who also earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors, Nick Barnhorst, David Mayer, Aaron Weldon and Biko Bradnock-Brennan, who was named to the A-10 All-Rookie team, has been stellar this season. The 49ers have recorded nine shutouts and limited 17 foes to a goal or less this season.
Thursday's game will mark the third meeting between Charlotte and UAB in less than a year. Charlotte and UAB tied, 1-1, double overtime at Charlotte earlier this season, August 31. The 49ers defeated UAB, 3-1, on the road in the second round of the last season's NCAA Tournament, November 20. The 49ers lead the all-time series with UAB, 14-9-3.
