CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Track and field assistant coach Ed Schlichter met with a group of second graders from Mountain Island Day School Monday afternoon at Belk Track. The students, who are members of the school's newly formed Running Club, are preparing to run their first ever 5K road race this Saturday.

Called 'Mariners on the Move', the club is coached by UNC Charlotte alumnus Misty Fraley, a second grade teacher at Mountain Island Day School.

"This is the first athletic club we've ever had," Fraley explained. "We started it in order to build endurance, strengthening and training. We run every day in the morning before school, and we also have lessons about self esteem, nutrition, and proper exercise."

Schlichter, with help from cross country/track standouts Amanda Goetschius and Aurora Trujillo, spoke with the children about training techniques, the importance of pacing in distance running, and proper nutrition to fuel healthy bodies. The students were able to ask questions, tour the facility and even run a lap around the track.

Fraley will join her group of students in the CPCC Skyline 5K race this Saturday, April 28th in downtown Charlotte.

"We've been training since January and we're up to three miles now, so hopefully we'll be able to do it," she said. "We're all really excited."
