Charlotte women's tennis has received a number-two seed and will get its second-ever Atlantic 10 Championships bye, which start this Thursday through Sunday at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. The number-two seeding matches the same spot they received in the 2006 Championships, in the school's first year of league membership. That team finished runners-up, the highest finish for Charlotte in a women's tennis conference tournament.

Charlotte will play on Friday at 1 p.m. against 10-seeded Saint Louis Billikens, which upset seven-seeded Fordham 4-2 on Thusday afternoon.

The 49ers enter the weekend with a 15-5 overall mark. Charlotte won two of their final three matches to end the season and the team put together a 3-1 mark in conference matches this season, beating St. Bonaventure on a neutral court and taking out Richmond and Dayton on the road. Charlotte's only loss in league was to top-seeded Massachusetts on March 20 in Charleston, S.C. Charlotte and Massachusetts are the only two teams receiving byes in the 14-team field.

Charlotte has five players boasting 14 or more singles victories, led by freshman Natsuko Takayanagi (Fukui, Japan), who is 22-6. The 49ers have won 75 percent of their doubles matches in the dual match season, with the team's top two pairs sporting a combined 36-6 mark. Charlotte's number-two pairing of junior Anna Ekelund (Lomma, Sweden) and freshman Lisa Grosselius (Molndal, Sweden) leading the way with a 19-2 mark together this season, which included a 15-1 record in dual matches and a perfect 4-0 against league opponents.

In addition to the second-place result in 2006, Charlotte has finished third three times, with a fifth and a sixth place finish in the ledger. Charlotte has not finished in the bottom half of the tournament in six trips.
