|Men's Tennis Undefeated in Conference, 4-3 at GW|
Charlotte men's tennis stayed perfect in league matches with a 4-3 win on the road at George Washington Saturday morning in the nation's capital. The 49ers are now 14-6 on the season, dropping GW to 10-8 overall, 2-3 in A-10 matches.
"This match went down to the wire," said Charlotte head coach Billy Boykin. GW is a talented team with lots of experience and we knew we would need a strong effort. The match was back and forth for a while and our kids really stepped up when they needed to win big points. I am happy for our team: they earned a tough win today."
In singles play, Charlotte needed to capture four of the six matches to get the team victory, which it did with four straight-sets wins at two, three, four and five for Charlotte's four points.
Khalil took his 13th straight victory in singles and improved to 13-1 winning in a third set when Ugur Atalay retired. Fellow freshman Alex Calott (Charlotte, N.C. Ardrey Kell HS) needed a seventh game in each set to win 7-6 (2), 7-5 at number-three, with classmate Paul Cisti (Arcachon, France) also going to a first-set tiebreaker 7-4 (4), 6-4 for the win. Lone senior Anthony Davison won 6-1, 6-4 at number five.
Calott took the team lead with his 17th singles win, while Cisti kept pace with 16 singles victories. Davison is 14-12 for the season in singles. Cisti and Davison have won three straight, with Calott taking two in a row.
The 49ers final match of the regular season will be Wednesday at Radford at 3 p.m.
