Charlotte freshman Kamil Khalil (Moscow, Russia) won his fourth-straight singles match with a 6-4, 6-0 result at number three Saturday, but it was all the 49ers could muster in a 6-1 road loss at No. 46 South Carolina in men's tennis action at the Carolina Tennis Center. Charlotte is now 7-3, while the Gamecocks are 10-1 so far in 2012.
Khalil is 4-1 in singles for the season after enrolling at Charlotte in time for the spring semester.
"We're showing improvement from match to match," said Charlotte head coach Billy Boykin. "There are certain phases of the game that we need to clean up if we want to beat teams of South Carolina's caliber. I am pleased with our progress. Kamil Khalil played very well today. He continues to improve."
The closest Charlotte came to claiming a second point was at number six, where freshman Nate Shanok (Boca Raton, Fla. / Spanish River HS) won his opening set 6-3, but fell 6-2 and 6-3 in the final two sets.
Charlotte's three losses have come at the hands of a nationally-ranked opponent.
This was the first of a four-match road swing. The 49ers will next play at Presbyterian Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
